About Us
US UK Tax Returns exists for people whose tax affairs do not stop at a border. We prepare the American and British returns as a single piece of work.

Why the two returns belong together
The United States taxes its citizens wherever they live. The United Kingdom taxes its residents on their worldwide income. Anyone who is both, or who moves between the two, is inside two systems at once, with different tax years, different treatment of pensions, savings and property, and a treaty that resolves some of the overlap but not all of it.
When each return is prepared by a different adviser, the gaps show up in the joins: a foreign tax credit that does not match the UK liability, an ISA reported as tax free in one country and ignored in the other, a treaty position taken without the disclosure that goes with it.
We start from the other end. Both returns are prepared in the same engagement, reconciled against each other, and filed with an explanation of why each position was taken.
How we work
One file, two returns
The US return and the UK return are prepared together, by people who can read both. A credit claimed on one has to be supported by tax actually paid on the other, and a residence position taken with HMRC has to be consistent with the one taken with the IRS.
Primary sources, cited
What we tell clients is drawn from the Code, the treaty text, IRS instructions and HMRC manuals, not from summaries of them. Every guide on this site links to the official page it relies on, so you can check us.
Scope before fees
Before work begins we set out which returns and forms apply, which years are open and what the engagement covers. If something turns out to be outside that scope, we say so before doing it.
Plain answers
Cross-border tax has more exceptions than rules. We say what the general position is, what would change it, and where the answer is genuinely uncertain, rather than promising an outcome no one can guarantee.
From first call to filing
Every engagement follows the same sequence, whether it is one year’s Form 1040 or a six-year catch-up across both countries.
- 01
Conversation
Where you live, what you earn, what you hold and which years are outstanding. We identify what applies.
- 02
Scope
A written list of the returns, forms and years in the engagement, with the fee and what it covers.
- 03
Documents
A single checklist covering both countries, so the same statement is not requested twice.
- 04
Preparation
Both returns are prepared together and reconciled: income, credits, treaty positions and disclosures.
- 05
Review and filing
You review drafts with an explanation of each position taken. We file once you approve.
- 06
The next year
The same people keep the file, and carry forward credits, elections and anything to watch.
